The Importance of Municipal Government Essay - 649 Words
Government Is Important in Citizensââ¬â¢ Daily Lives Imagine a town without government. At first, such a place may seem like a fantastic place to live, there would be no laws, no fines, and no taxes. But look a little closer and youââ¬â¢ll notice mounds of reeking trash heaped along sidewalks and by doors, sewage oozing from pipes and seeping into the soil, and streets and roads in horrible states of disrepair. Buildings would burn to the ground for lack of fire departments, and schools, no longer supported by tax dollars, would become empty and silent. While it may seem that government officials do nothing but argue and impose taxes, without them a community couldnââ¬â¢t function. Some of the amenities we take for granted now asâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Trash disposal services, a part of everyday life, are organized and financed by municipal government. Public schools, too, rely on government funding to make educational opportunities available to everyone, regardless o f nationality or background. Other government-funded services like the police department and the fire department are essential to improving public safety. Even some hospitals operate on government grants, loans, and donations. Local government is vital for securing a communityââ¬â¢s safety and well-being. Likewise, our local governments provide many things for the enjoyment of the community. Think of our parks and open space, for example. These are great places to come and enjoy with friends and family. Government officials decide where a park will be, how much can be spent to purchase the equipment and for construction, and how to meet the maintenance needs for the facility. Libraries, too, are excellent places organized and funded by municipal government. Nature preserves, recreation centers, and many more pleasurable resources for the town are organized and provided for by municipal government. Another important role government plays is managing revenue from taxes.
