The Importance of Municipal Government Essay - 649 Words

Government Is Important in Citizens’ Daily Lives Imagine a town without government. At first, such a place may seem like a fantastic place to live, there would be no laws, no fines, and no taxes. But look a little closer and you’ll notice mounds of reeking trash heaped along sidewalks and by doors, sewage oozing from pipes and seeping into the soil, and streets and roads in horrible states of disrepair. Buildings would burn to the ground for lack of fire departments, and schools, no longer supported by tax dollars, would become empty and silent. While it may seem that government officials do nothing but argue and impose taxes, without them a community couldn’t function. Some of the amenities we take for granted now as†¦show more content†¦Trash disposal services, a part of everyday life, are organized and financed by municipal government. Public schools, too, rely on government funding to make educational opportunities available to everyone, regardless o f nationality or background. Other government-funded services like the police department and the fire department are essential to improving public safety. Even some hospitals operate on government grants, loans, and donations. Local government is vital for securing a community’s safety and well-being. Likewise, our local governments provide many things for the enjoyment of the community. Think of our parks and open space, for example. These are great places to come and enjoy with friends and family. Government officials decide where a park will be, how much can be spent to purchase the equipment and for construction, and how to meet the maintenance needs for the facility. Libraries, too, are excellent places organized and funded by municipal government. Nature preserves, recreation centers, and many more pleasurable resources for the town are organized and provided for by municipal government. Another important role government plays is managing revenue from taxes. Though taxe s are frustrating at times and it may seem that the government is stealing money from honest, hardworking people, that tax money is what funds all government projects, fromShow MoreRelatedWomen s Civil Rights Of Saudi Arabia And Consultative Council ( Majlis Alshura )1591 Words   |  7 Pagesthey still believe that home is the best place for women. Running for Texas Senator - 1493 Words

If Jennifer Alvarado was running as a Texas Senator, she would do everything in her capability to defeat her opponents and successfully win the election. Marijuana is legal in a few states such as Colorado and Washington. These are the only two states that have legalized it for â€Å"recreational† use, for ones enjoyment. According to the Governing the States and Localities website, Montana, New Mexico, Arizona, and of course, California are just some of the states that have legalized the use of medical marijuana (Governing the States and Localities). As an American citizen, I believe if it is â€Å"right† or â€Å"legal† in one state it should remain as it is on the other states. Therefore, since it is legal for recreational use in Colorado and Washington, it should be available to all of the states in America, including the states with legal medical use. I believe it definitely needs to be a federal issue; it isn’t fair for the drug to be handed in some states and prohibited in others. American citizens should have the right to obtain marijuana regardless of what state they live in, it should be legal for all states! Either way, it will happen illegally if we do not legalize it. John Calvin Essay Example For Students

John Calvin Essay There are many people in history who have made a very big impact on theirculture, times, and or religion. John Calvin was by far one of these few greatpeople. He had such a big influence in the time which he lived from 1509 to1564. John Calvin devoted almost his whole life to the promoting ofProtestantism and made such a difference that his impact is still seen today inChristianity. Calvin was born in France and was the second son in his family of fivebrothers. He grew and then decided to go to the famous University of Paris tostudy to be a priest. His father then had a conflict with the bishop whoemployed him so he then turned to the study of law. While he was studying inParis he came across the writings of Martin Luther. His cousin then introducedhim to the ideas of reformation. Protestantism began gathering momentum all overEurope. Then by 1533 Calvin began getting involved with the movement. That yearCalvin had his salvation experience. He wrote about it later and stated, Godsubdued and brought my heart to surrender. It was more hardened against suchmatters than was to be expected in such a young man. Calvin then knew to fullfill his place with God he would have to turn away from the Roman Catholicchurch, so that is exactly what he did. His first attempt was November first that year. He gave a speech just likeMartin Luthers, attacking the church and demanding a reform. He figured thatif he spoke to the people and educated them on Protestantism then they would beready to make changes in the Roman Catholic church. It did not turn out his wayat all. This resulted in anti-Protestant protests all over Paris, forcing him toflee for his own safety. He roamed from place to place and then ended up inBasle, Switzerland. This is where he started his writing. You see John Calvinwas considered a quiet, timid natured man. The kind of man who would never fightin disputes. In his time there he really got to do the things he wanted toaccomplish out of life. These were to study and learn about God and his holyword. After this he went to Geneva after getting kicked out for his teachings hegot invited back to help turn the city around spiritually. He never held apolitical office in Geneva but he ruled with strictness and sin was punished. Hehad laws passed to promote Christian behaviour. Persecuted Protestants fled fromall over Europe to reside here. One last thing Calvin is known for is his theology. This is put together in aCalvinism. The ideas of the Calvin doctrine are men are completely unable tosave themselves with their own works. Salvation is a matter of Gods choosingthose who will be saved, and that God chooses without any consideration of amans good works. If someone is chosen of God, there was no way they couldever reject Christ or fail to endure to the end of their Christian life. Finally, he taught that Jesus died only for the people who God chose. This iscalled limited atonement and is one of Calvins most controversial doctrinesin Calvinism. As you can see John Calvin was truly a great man. Through his writings, speeches, and Calvinism he really reached his goal in life to learn about Godand his holy word. John Calvin devoted almost his whole life to the promoting ofProtestantism and made such a difference that his impact is still seen today inChristianity.

Roe-Deer by Ted Hughes, An Advancement of Learning by Seamus Heaney And The Arrival of The Bees Box by Sylvia Plath Paper In the poem Roe-Deer the poet describes the deer as a very secretive and supernatural animal, which, in my opinion has caused the poet to write about his experience. They planted their two or three years of secret deer hood Clear on my snow screen vision of the abnormal. The poet knows that he is not supposed to see the deer, as if they are usually hidden by a snow screen because they do not usually let themselves to be seen at all. When the deer run off the poet is disappointed because he feels that they had come for him, when they hadnt. He wishes, The deer had come for me. When the deer disappear Into the boil of big flakes. On the last line of the poem he says that everything returned Back to the ordinary. When the poet sees the animals he feels that the deer are special Clear on my snow-screen vision of the abnormal and is pleased that have come into his own private dimension. They had happened into my dimension The poet thinks about the deers secret lives. He envies them and wishes he could join their company. The poet senses that the deer inhabit a supernatural element, and that the snow makes everything seem abnormal. The snow enhances the poets Vision of the abnormal and when the poet returns back to the ordinary he is disappointed. He also writes about the deer living secret lives that humans dont know about, They planted their two or three years of secret deer hood. The poet regrets that he cannot communicate with the deer however much he wants to become apart of their deer hood. The deer had come for me. This is not true but the poet believes that it is. In the poem, An Advancement of Learning, the poet, Seamus Heaney, has a phobia of rats. The poem is about a person taking a walk and chooses to go under the bridge rather than over it. He notices an animal slime out of the water, it is a rat. The poet stares out the rat although he dislikes it he continues to stare. He describes the rat with its Back bunched and glistening, Ears plastered down on his knobbed skull, This makes the reader feel sick at the poets description of the animal. The poet describes the sighting as a battle, I established a dreaded Bridgehead He trained on me These lines are commonly associated with a war or battle so that is how we view his sighting. At the end of the poem the poet walks over the bridge, meaning he has lost this battle. After the experience with the rat the poet takes a different route rather than the route he usually takes. I took the embankment path (As always deferring The bridge). This is where the poet sees the rat, on the embankment path, so he walks over the bridge instead Then I walked over the bridge. He does this because he is so terrified by the rats that he couldnt stand to see another because it makes him sick feel sick, My throat sickened. So the only way to avoid them is to go over the bridge. The rat made the poet think about his past experiences with rats that lived in his house and yard. When his grey brothers scraped and fed Behind the hen-coop in our yard, On ceiling boards above my bed. The sighting is bringing back his almost forgotten childhood fear of the animal. Forgetting how I used to panic In the poem The Arrival of the Bee Box by Sylvia Plath we learn that the poet wants to be a bee keeper. She requests a box of bees, but when they arrive she is afraid of what they might do. This fear keeps her fascinated by the buzzing box and thinks of what she could do with the boxed bees. The box of bees cause of much anxiety because of the noise coming from the box, It is the noise that appals me most of all, The unintelligible syllables, Because of this noise the poet cant keep away from it, and is very curious about what is inside. And I cant keep away from it. There are no windows so I cant see what is in there. There is only a little grid, no exit. I put my eye to the grid. The poet thinks that she will starve them because she is too afraid to let them free, They can be sent back. They can die, I need feed them nothing, I am the owner. She the decides to set the bees free because she thinks that if they are hungry they will go for food; I wonder how hungry they are. I wonder if they would forget me They might ignore me immediately The poet relates the packing of the bees to the African slave trade, where black Africans were herded into a ship and packed together, squashed, so they could not move. With the swarmy feeling of African hands, Minute and shrunk for export, Black on black, angrily clambering. She also relates the buzzing to an ancient Roman mob that speaks Latin, which needs to be appeased by a Caesar. Its like a Roman mob, Small, taken one by one, but my god, together! I lay my ear to furious Latin. I am not a Caesar. When there is a riot the Caesar at the time would calm the mobs down. She says this because she can hear a language spoken by the bees, the buzzing, but she cant calm them down because she does not speak that language. The poems Roe-Deer and An Advancement of Learning are total contrasts to each other, in Roe-Deer the poet admires the animal, and describes it as a supernatural creature. In An Advancement of Learning the poet has a lot of hate towards the rat and regards it as his enemy, but, in The Arrival of The Bee Box the poet has mixed feelings about the bees, she is afraid of the bees and decides to kill them, but she changes her mind and decides to set them free.

Donatello Essays - Donatello, The Feast Of Herod, David,

Donatello Michelle Hoell Professor Kranz Humanities 2 16 Nov. 2001 Donatello is known as the most important sculptor of the Early Renaissance. The author, John Pope-Hennessy noted him as ?one of the greatest artists who ever lived? (Pope-Hennessy p.11). Donatello was a modest person who was very dedicated to his works. Because of his great dedication, he was able to create so much art in so many different varieties (Poeschke p.5). Donatello's origins, his accomplishments, and his impact are important aspects to appreciate the sculptor, Donatello. Donatello was born on 1386 in Florence, Italy by the name Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi. (library p.1). His father, Niccolo di Betto Bardi, was a wool comber. It is thought that he learned his career from one of the stone sculptors for the Cathedral of Florence around 1400 (britannica p.3). He assisted Filippo Brunelleschi, with whom he may have visited Rome and studied monuments of antiquity there (Blood p.1). Donatello started sculpting at the age of twenty. Donatello created masterpieces with stone, clay, bronze, or gold (Poeschke p.376). He is said to have worked in Lorenzo Ghiberti's shop and also had a shop of his own in Florence. Later in life he studied Roman Ruins and became a humanist. Donatello died on December 13, 1466 at the age of eighty. He never married and had no children (Blood p.1). Donatello's works can be separated into three periods. The first period is comprised of works done before the year 1425. During the first period, Donatello was greatly influenced by the Gothic style, yet classical and realistic influences were also Hoell 2 present. During this time Donatello identified himself as a realist. Most of his weeks of this period were spent in Florence (Blood p.2). One of the works completed during the first period is the marble David was one of Donatello's earliest works, which was completed around 1412 (britannica p.2). On February 20, 1408, Donatello was commissioned to make one of the buttresses, which were going to be placed on the choir of the Duomo in Florence. A total of twelve buttresses were supposed to be made by several different sculptors but the task was never completed. When Donatello finally completed his work, it was criticized of being too small to be placed in its location, which was eighteen meters high. The David ended up in the Duomo workshops for a few years. Then, in July 1416, it was moved to the Palazzo Vecchio. Donatello was then paid five extra florins to make some alterations to the statue. This may be when the very intricate details were added to Goliath's face and hair. He may have also added details to the clothing, such as seams, folds and fringes, during this time. Because of this, Donatello was noted of putting much more importance into the details of the sculpture more than any sculptor of this time puts (Poeschke p.27, 377). A while later the Prophet David was given a place of honor in the city hall to represent political freedom. Donatello's David was chosen for this place. Ghilberti, the leader in International Gothic Style, influenced this sculpture. International Gothic Style consisted of soft curves, which the D avid processed. The construction of the drapery also had a Gothic look. This work was made for the Cathedral but was later moved to Palazzo Vecchio in 1416. There, the David symbolized civic patriotism. It was later shadowed Hoell 3 by the huge Michelangelo version of David (britannica p.2). The David can be seen on page nine and is image one. Another work done during the first period is St. George. It was one of Donatello's most powerful works. It had demonstrated personality and confidence, which has not been seen since the classical antiquity (britannica p.2). St. George is image four on page ten. There appears to be holes made into the marble. These holes are thought to have held a wreath or bronze helmet on the head. The right hand was carved to hold a sword of lance made of bronze. The statue was completed on 1415 and the tabernacle niche in which is placed was completed around 1417 (Pope-Hennessy p.63, 64). It is unsure if Donatello had anything to do with designing the tabernacle in

s Republic - Gender Equality

Plato’s Republic was perhaps one of the more controversial pieces of writing from its time. In this book, Plato attempted to immortalize the ideals put forward by his teacher and mentor, Socrates the Sophist. Most of Socrates’ beliefs went against Athenian tradition and convention, and as such was subject to great disapproval from influential Athenian superiors. Essentially, Socrates disagreed with virtually every aspect of the way Athens was run. He had his own ideas about the way in which an ideal city should be run, and voiced his opinion on diverse topics of discussion including the role of Athenian women in society. On examination of Socrates’ discourse, as he put forward his viewpoint on a woman’s place in the ideal city in Plato’s Republic, it was glaringly obvious that his opinion would not be embraced open-heartedly by Athenian readers of that time. It was customary in ancient Greece that women’s activities were held completely separate from those of the men. In the time of Homer, women were seen as possessions, as was demonstrated throughout the Iliad, where they were awarded to men as prizes. Their status in society did not improve by very much in later years. In Thucydides’ account, one of the few mentions of women was made by Pericles, in his funeral oration, where he advocated that they should be â€Å"least talked of among the men, whether for good or for bad† (Thuc. 2.45). In essence, women lived in the shadows, unseen, and unheard, with their primary purpose being to bear heirs for their husbands. The proposition put forward in Plato’s Republic was in complete disagreement with this long-standing view of society’s females. The concept that women and men should be treated equally was totally foreign, and the presentation of this idea to any ancient Athenian male would have been immediately scorned. It would have been viewed as totally unacceptable, because this was simply not the way things were do... Conflict within Nursing Work Environment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Conflict within Nursing Work Environment - Essay Example Nurses are assuming a significant position in this system and its complex transitions. Therefore, as expected, nurses regularly experience conflicts during the course of their work, whether it is during their day-to-day practice or due to larger organizational conflicts. Interpersonal conflicts occur between individuals in the work environment. If two stakeholders are on an equivalent power level, interpersonal disagreements may simply cause irritation and annoyance. However, if one of the stakeholders has some actual or perceived authority over the other, this situation can potentially lead to what is called as conflict (Caplan G., 1964). This work is a critical reflection of a conflict event in work place that I had experienced. Before going into analysis of that particular event, the process of a conflict and its results needed to be known, since the idea of this reflective article is to explore how a conflict can be managed in practice and why. The incidence that I am going to state involves workplace interpersonal conflict, and this took place in our ward. A female senior nurse found an elderly female patient very upset, complaining about a male physician who had treated the patient in a rude manner. The patient asked for more medicine for her pain, but did not get it, and was told to accept the pain and stop nagging. The patient started to cry, but the physician let the room ignoring that she was hurt with his comments and her pain was real. The nurse confronted the physician about his conduct, and the physician began by trivializing the incident and continued by indicating his disagreement with the underlying o rganizational policy, and ended with a personal attack on the behaviour of the nurse to a physician. The stake holders in this scenario are the nurse, the physician, and the patient. It is obvious from the above scenario that there has been incompatible preference ordering between the nurse, the physician, and the patient. This is a situation where the patient has perceived that the physician has frustrated her concern. This is a destructive conflict, since this issue has been amplified, broadly defined with the addition of tangential items, and emotionally charged. When it comes to the nurse and she tries to manage the conflict, it becomes constructive when she confronts the physician to solve the issue between the patient and the physician. Here the same issue is focused and kept at a manageable size. Only peripheral issues that relate to the main point are discussed, and the process of choice is action, rather than a reaction. In contrast to destructive conflict, here when the nurse plans to resolve it, there is no competition and demonstration of power that is constructive. Her discussion with the physician about this issue is characterized by solutions that respond to the needs of all stakeholders in this conflict in an attempt to finding an acceptable solution that may be a compromise or a new one
